Two Lakes and Kakwa, Alberta

Kakwa Park is a beautiful remote location with lots to offer. Kakwa Park is located 16okm from Grande Prairie. From Grande Prairie travel south along Hwy. 40 towards Grovedale. Just past Grovedale is a T intersection, go west on Hyw 666, which becomes the Two Lakes Road. This road is gravel only part way, after that travel is advised only when weather conditions are good as this can be a dangerous rough muddy road. 4×4 trucks are often required. Kakwa park is located at the end of the Two Lakes Road.
Two Lakes is a remote Provincial Recreation area located at Km 150 on the Two Lakes Road . There is 86 campsites and day use area available. ATV’s are not permitted within the park boundres. Sherman Meadows is an old air field located past Two Lakes Campground at Km 159 and is an excellent choice for camping and quadding as it is not a provincial park and quads are allowed. Lick Creek or Tin Town is a smaller camping site located along the creek bank. In the summer, this area is popular for Horse Riding and horses are frequent around Sherman Meadows. In the winter the area is popular with snowmobiles. ATV’s are recommeded past Sherman Meadows.

Kakwa Falls. In an effort to protect the environment and wildlife, quadding within the park is limited to the main park trail which travels to Kakwa Falls. This is about a 20km trail which can be driven in a 4×4 vehicle if you like a rough ride. I recommend camping/unloading prior to the park boundary. Sherman Meadows is located at Km 159 along the Two Lakes road and is a good location for camping/unloading. Lick Creek is located just past this and is a small area along the banks of the creek popular for camping & quadding. If you enjoy hiking there is many more trails to explore within the park. In the winter snowmobiles are less limited because they impact the environment less.

Horn Ridge – A few kilometers prior to the Kakwa Park Boundary there is a large staging area with picnic tables and fire pits. This is a fork in the trail. Taking the left trail crosses Stinking Creek and continues to Kakwa Falls. Taking the right (West) trail travels to Horn Ridge. This trail climbs up the mountain, above the tree line, to one of the tallest mountain peaks with 3 look out points. This is a beautiful trail, but not for novice riders.
